Basquiat/Warhol collaboration headlines NY auction

(2 Nov 2018) A painting collaboration by Jean-Michael Basquiat and Andy Warhol will highlight Sotheby's Contemporary, Impressionist & Modern art auction on November 14th. The painting titled "Taxi, 45th/Broadway" comes from the collection of Gianni Versace and is expected to sell for between 6 and 8 million dollars. Two works by Georgia O'Keeffe will be in the contemporary section of the auction for the first time. Gregoire Billault, Head of Contemporary Art at Sotheby's, said he thinks contemporary art buyers need to be re-introduced to O'Keeffe's work. An enormous two-panel Gerhard Richter piece will also be up for auction. The painting comes from Richter's famous Abstrakte Bilder series and has been in the same private collection for over 30 years. The Impressionist segment of the auction is headlined by Marsden Hartley's "PRE-WAR PAGEANT." Sotheby's August Uribe said the painting is "the most important abstract American painting to ever come on the market." Hartley painted the work during his time in Berlin in 1913. It is one of ten known Hartley works to still have the original artist painted frame. The auction will also include major works by Keith Haring, Gerhard Richter, Wassily Kandinsky, Willem de Kooning, among others.
