Vandalia Police Search For Crooks Breaking Into Cars

Vandalia police are dealing with more and more car break-ins over the past 3-4 weeks. Many of the victims are making themselves easy targets because of what they are not doing. Ashley Farnett came to the park to let her kids play. While she's keeping an eye on them someone could be checking to see if she left anything worth a quick buck in her car. "I think it's pretty sad that you can't even leave your car unlocked even at your own home," said Farnett. Most of the time, the crooks do not even need to break out a car window, they are able to just open the door because the vehicle was left unlocked. "Even if it's in my driveway I keep my doors locked. Usually if I have my purse I usually put my purse in the trunk when I'm at home as opposed to opening your trunk and putting it in there in a parking lot. I've heard that's not a good idea because then they know it's in your trunk," said Farnett. Vandalia has increased patrols, and even added more bike police on the street. Lt. Kurt Althouse wants you to do yourself a favor and get anything of value out of your car. "Take their valuables out of their vehicles. Certainly lock their vehicles. Park their vehicles in a well-lit area just to make sure they prevent themselves from becoming a victim," said Lt. Althouse. "Someone coming home at the end of a day at work or coming home at the end of being out at night may not really think about that and leave those things in their vehicle and that really is setting themselves up to possibly be the victim of a theft," said Lt. Althouse. When you are in a rush, just running into a shop for a minute or at the end of a long day we all know how easy it is to forget something. "Especially when you have kids and you're sidetracked and you think 'It's just a minute.' It probably takes them just a minute to take your things," said Farnett.
