(5 Dec 2018) AWKWAFINA PONDERS CHINA BOX OFFICE DISAPPOINTMENT FOR 'CRAZY RICH ASIANS' "Crazy Rich Asians" star Awkwafina says she isn't sure why the romantic comedy underperformed at the Chinese box office when it opened there last weekend. "I was reading my Apple News and there was this giant picture of me. And the headline was that. And I was like why is it a giant picture of me, though? Like, was I the reason?" she said, laughing. "But yeah, it's weird. And maybe it goes back to that whole – the conundrum of the Asian American. You know, you're not American enough here, you're not – you know. I don't know. Maybe they were confused. Like I don't know. Who knows?" Industry data show the made just $1.2 million over the three days of its initial release, far behind local productions in the world's second-largest movie market. That compared with the $25.6 million grossed by the Chinese crime drama "A Cool Fish," according to data from analyst Comscore. The film's poor performance in China contrasts sharply with its near-rapturous reception in the Chinese diaspora, especially in the U.S. where it was hailed as the first all-Asian box office smash.
