The chimpanzee is the closest animal relative to humans. The highly intelligent primates, native to Central Africa, share many of our physical and behavioral characteristics. In fact, 98% of a chimpanzee's DNA is identical to humans. That similarity has made them attractive to medical researchers - and sparked a major debate over animal rights and medical ethics.
