J. Brooks Spector, Associate Editor of The Daily Maverick, spent three decades as an American diplomat specialising in international cultural and educational exchanges. In 1992 he led negotiations for the return of American cultural and educational exchanges with the emerging non-racial, new South Africa.

Spector spoke at the National Arts Festival in Grahamestown on 3 July 2012. He addressed the topic "Cultural Boycotts -- Are They Effective?"
