China is now the world's largest meat producer, and also the second-largest beef importer. The country consumed nearly 70 million tons of beef last year, worth about 3.3 billion US dollars. The amount of imported beef is expected to reach over 120 million tons by 2027. That's an annual growth of 7.6 percent. The imports are mostly from just several countries, with Australia leading the way last year. Since 2014, China has continued to expand its list of importers, which now includes many countries in the European Union.
