Mattis on border troops, missile treaty pullout and Khashoggi

(28 Oct 2018) U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says the military has already begun delivering jersey barriers to the southern border in conjunction with plans to deploy active duty troops there as a caravan of Central Americans slowly heads across Mexico toward the United States. Mattis says details of the deployment, including the number of troops, are still being worked out, but he should have them by Sunday night. The additional troops will provide logistical and other support to the Border Patrol and will bolster the efforts of the approximately 2,000 National Guard forces already there. The new forces are expected to provide logistical assistance such as air support and equipment, such as vehicles and tents. Mattis said he met with Saudi Arabia's foreign minister during an international conference and urged a full and complete investigation into the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi. Mattis says Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir "had no reservations at all" about the need for the kingdom to be transparent about the death of the Washington Post columnist at the kingdom's consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Mattis did not detail the conversation they had Saturday, but said he told Jubeir that "we need to know what happened." Turkish officials have said that a Saudi team of 15 men tortured, killed and dismembered the writer in a premeditated act. The kingdom initially said it knew nothing about what happened to Khashoggi, but on Thursday said evidence shows the killing was premeditated. Mattis spoke Sunday during a visit to the Czech Republic.
