Yesterday I was reading Google News and came across an article about tobacco killing one million women a year. http://www.foodconsumer.org/newsite/Non-food/Miscellaneous/tobacco_use_kills_more_than_a_million_women_2905101122.html My big bugaboo is: What is so special about women? Aren't we supposed to be equal? Why should I care if cigarettes kill this amount of women vs. that amount of men? Perhaps my attitude is because I'm part of the hated white-male class, and that propels me to think news like this is overblown (thank God I'm not Anglo-Saxon-Protestant too). ((sarcasm alert)) If cigarettes are bad, which I'll concede with quite deliberate ease, then all deaths would be worth reporting as a whole. Subdividing them is counterproductive, unless WHO is suggesting they (women) are an underclass.
