(16 Nov 2018) A rare, golden-bellied mangabey has been born at the Budapest Zoo.
The baby monkey, whose species originates in the forests of west Africa, was born on 22 October.
Budapest Zoo spokesman Zoltan Hanga said Friday that the infant has not yet been named, or its gender determined, as its keepers do not yet want to disturb the newborn's intimacy with its mother.
Hanga said there are a total of only 27 golden-bellied mangabeys in 12 zoos around the world.
"So it is really a rarity," he said.
The ancestors of the infant's father are from zoos in the United States while the mother's are from European zoos, making the baby monkey a significant contributor to the preservation of genetic diversity among the members of the species in captivity.
