With prices for many raw materials rising rapidly, Germans have developed a sudden interest in what lies beneath their feet. From the North Sea to the Bavarian Forest, people are once again digging for oil, fluorite, tungsten, copper and tin. Even old, long abandoned mine shafts -- like the one in the town of Niederschlag in Saxony -- are due for reopening.
