"This story resonated for me," said Steve McQueen of Solomon Northop's 1853 book "Twelve Years a Slave." "Possibly just because I live in Amsterdam, it reminded me very much of Anne Frank's diary." In a November 9, 2013 dialogue at the Walker Art Center, McQueen discussed his film "12 Years a Slave," the enduring importance of its themes today, and his life as a visual artist and filmmaker.
