Juan Oliver (Alberto Ammann) is so eager to make a good impression that he turns up a day early for his new job as a prison guard. His wife Elena (Marta Etura) is pregnant and the couple really need a steady income. But while he's being shown round, Juan is knocked out in an accident and taken to Cell 211 to recover. A riot then breaks out and the remaining prison guards flee, leaving him to his fate. Thinking on his feet, Juan realises that if he is to survive this ordeal he must pretend to be one of the prisoners. Posing as a newly arrived convicted murderer, he befriends the leader of the rioters -- a brutal lifer named Malamadre (Luis Tosar) -- and makes himself invaluable by offering tactical advice when a stand-off develops. But this is a deadly game and Juan's perspective on events soon begins to shift.
