Tour Scotland wee video of photographs of Newcastleton, also known as Copshaw Holm, a village in the Scottish Borders and within the historic boundaries of Roxburghshire, a few miles from the border of Scotland with England. The village is in Liddesdale and is on the Liddel Water, and is the site of Hermitage Castle. Newcastleton was built as a result of the land clearances in the 1790s when people were forced to move from Old Castleton village. Mangerton Cross also known as Minholm Cross by Newcastleton, commemorates the murder of Alexander Armstrong, the 2nd laird of Mangerton, at Hermitage Castle by a member of the infamous de Soulis family. The Cross is one of the Armstrong Clan’s most ancient and valued relics. The Armstrong name was common over the whole of Northumbria and the Scottish Borders. The Armstrongs became a powerful and warlike clan in Liddesdale and the Debatable Lands. Amongst the many distinguished Armstrongs are Sir Alexander Armstrong who was an Arctic explorer, and also Neil Armstrong who was the first man to walk upon the Moon, taking with him a piece of the Clan Armstrong tartan.
