The URUAV Lemur 220 is the first frame I've seen in person with the middle plate made of aluminum.  It sounds like a good idea,, but it needs some tweaking to get the overall weight down a little. 
 The recently announced Floss 3.0 also includes in a middle aluminum plate.  It will be interesting to see how many more frames are released with the same idea.
