Introduction:
The Wind Rises will be the final film from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, whose previous works include notable films like My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away and Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea. It is the first film that Miyazaki has solely directed in five years; his last work was the 2008 film Ponyo. This film is based on a manga by Hayao Miyazaki, which was serialized in the monthly magazine Model Graphix in 2009. The story of the manga is in turn loosely based on Tatsuo Hori's short novel "The Wind Has Risen", written in 1936--1937. Although the story in the film follows the historical account of Horikoshi's aircraft development chronologically, the rendition of his private life is entirely fictional.
Miyazaki was inspired to make the film after reading this quote from Horikoshi: "All I wanted to do was to make something beautiful.
The Wind Rises was No. 1 for 8 weeks In Japan! A record-breaking 12 billion yen and is the first film to have broken the 10 billion yen mark since 2008's 'Ponyo', which was the previous film Miyazaki had directed.

Synopsis:
In "The Wind Rises," Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world's most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan's plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.
