Romania to vote on limiting definition of family to heterosexual, married couples

(4 Oct 2018) Around one hundred demonstrators gathered in Draganesti Olt on Thursday in support of a referendum seeking to limit Romania's constitutional definition of family to heterosexual, married couples. The referendum to be held Saturday and Sunday follows a petition signed by 3 million Romanians to demand the constitution be changed to explicitly state that marriage is between a man and a woman. Demonstrators gathered outside the town hall with banners before marching through the small provincial town. Speaking during the rally bishop of Slatina and Romanati Sebastian Pascanu said the demonstrators stood to "defend marriage against those who want a different type or marriage." Dozens of European Parliament lawmakers say they oppose the vote that could outlaw same-sex marriage in Romania because it risked discriminating against some families. Romania currently doesn't recognize same-sex couples.
