Philip Hammond launched a tax raid on 150,000 people who claim to be self employed but still have a main job in today's Budget. The Chancellor has moved to target people who set themselves up as private companies, which allows them to avoid paying national insurance contributions. Mr Hammond believes about 150,000 of the 450,000 self-employed Britons working in the private sector are actually working for a single employer long-term. A similar crackdown was launched in the public sector last year. But in concessions to Tory rebels alarmed at the crackdown, Mr Hammond said the change would only come into force in April 2020 and will only impact contractors working for medium and large businesses.
