Central Park stretches through the center of Manhattan as an enormous designed landscape surrounded by some of the densest urban development in the United States. Created in the 19th century from plans by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the park combines meadows, lakes, wooded areas, bridges, promenades and deliberately constructed naturalistic scenery across more than 800 acres. Landmarks including Bethesda Terrace, The Mall, Bow Bridge and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir form part of a landscape that fundamentally changed the planning of New York and influenced the development of public parks around the world.
