The European Union Commission has given the Polish government until September 12 to submit a restructuring plan for shipyards in Stettin, Gdingen, and Gdansk. The Poles received billions in EU subsidies for the shipyards. Now they have to show that private investors are interested, or else pay back the subsidies. Thousands of jobs are in the balance. The Gdansk shipyard, in particular, also has a symbolic importance for the Poles. It was the cradle of the Solidarity movement and the countrys democratization.
