THE first of its kind but not the last — TeachXpo 2015 will be back, organisers say. TeachXpo came to a close yesterday as 280 teachers and more than 60 presenters wrapped up the last of more than 100 workshops. The teachers’ conference was the first threeday event of its kind in the region, more than a decade after the last one-day conference.

One of the last workshops was Learning Architects founder Rob Clarke’s interactive presentation about social media for school learners. The workshop focused on how to best use social media platforms to benefit students and schools as a whole. “Social media usage changes based on context. In early childhood centres it is used more with parents to let them know about things like sausage sizzles and the likes,” he says. “At primary schools it is a means to connect with the school community.” Mr Clarke outlined how social media in secondary schools poses some difficulties. “Partly because there is a gap between where children are in usage and how schools and parents respond to it. It is challenging with teenagers. Schools are not well-prepared.” Parental involvement and how to reach the school community was a focus of the workshop. Teachers told stories of many students having Facebook profiles without their parents knowing, despite being under the legal age of 13 to have a Facebook profile. “I help people think widely and up-skill them. Learning Architects is about developing understanding, insight and vision.”
