Ryan, a member of the 101st Airborne Division, is 23 years old . . . and learning to walk again.

In 2008 he was seriously wounded while fighting in Afghanistan. While waiting for the Medevac helicopter to arrive, his heart stopped beating - twice. His comrades refused to give up on him and got his heart started again. A tough kid.

Ryan's parents flew to a U.S. military hospital in Germany and met with Ryan's surgeon. "Where is he hurt?" Ryan's mother asked in a hesitant whisper. The doctor paused, then softly said, "Other than his left arm . . . everywhere."

I had the honor of meeting Ryan in May of this year, when he received the Bronze Star medal at a small ceremony at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He walked up to the podium, head held high, to receive his medal from a General - his steps tentative on new artificial legs, a cane for stability. A proud and humble young man.

As described in the attached flyer, the 101st Airborne Division Association is raising funds to build a room addition - where Ryan can live and care for himself with privacy and dignity.

Young soldiers like Ryan have sacrificed their bodies so that we can live in safety. He'll be reminded of his sacrifices every day for the rest of his life.

If you would like to show your appreciation for Ryan's sacrifices, please assist our fund raising effort. These are tough economic times and many of us have no spare cash. I certainly understand that. If you go out for lunch, how much do you spend? If you skipped just one lunch and donated your lunch money - it would help us achieve our goal for Ryan.

I would appreciate it if you shared this e-mail and the attached flyer with your co-workers and friends - and encouraged them to "Skip a Lunch for Ryan."
