How To Protect Your Computer From Virus For Free in this live YouTube tutorial, even how to clean an infected PC for free. If you are thinking of buying antivirus, you may be wondering which is the best antivirus to get, and you may also be wondering how good are the free antivirus versions. The truth is that antivirus is only 1 aspect of computer protection. You need to do implement various levels of security on your computer, i.e good administration. So today we will cover the various layers of defence that you need to have in place for extra peace of mind.
Remember Eli The Computer Guy, so this tutorial will be based on some of his lessons which I was following before I started repairing tech, as well as my own experience so far.
1. Disclaimer: I am not an expert in cyber security. I have experience and common sense. This tutorial is an example of what I do for my own computers, and if you wish to do similar, you should first consult a professional security expert.
2. This is more relevant for Windows based PCs, since they are the big boys, most virus are written with windows in mind. For Linux and Mac OS, there are less virus issues, although not impossible, but I do not have personal experience with viruses on these 2 systems.
3. No protection is 100% fool proof, bigger organisations with tighter security systems get hacked.
4. Protection is better than cure. At times, if some dangerous Trojan worm has integrated into your system files, no magical antivirus will do the trick, that will be a case of complete wipe and reload
5. Unfortunately all software need to be updated, including your OS, not good news with Windows 10. Other software like Adobe products, Java (some applications may still use java, best to avoid if its not needed as it is a security threat)
6. Do not use the administrator account. Create user accounts for each user and use them instead.
7. Create strong passwords
8. Firewall need to be checked, only allow what you are sure is genuine.
9. When you download new software, especially free ones, use custom installation instead of express as often there is bloatware and potentially virus and spyware that accompany them.
10. Do not use torrent, for god's sake stay away from torrents.
11. Do not use dodgy websites.
12. If you are able to, keep you OS on a different drive only for booting into the OS and main system files, and keep your personal date on a completely different drive, and please back up all your data, best practice is 3 locations, locally on a different drive, online, and offsite.
13. Keep an organised filing system. Delete files and programs that you do not use.
14. Now, the main difference between free and paid software, in my experience, is that you have to do a lot of manual updates, and manual infection clean with free versions. This will vary according to your mileage, since I use my PC responsibly, the free version work well for me, you may need to consider paid versions for your situation.
15. There is no really best free antivirus, pick one and go with it, read reviews.
16. I personally recommend to separate you antivirus and antispyware, so do not go for all in one protection.
17. My default choice is AVG for antivirus, and SpyBot For antispyware, and I use CCleaner for tidying up.
18. Default Windows Bit Defender is okay, better than before on Windows 7, but you need anti spyware on top.
