You wanted to know if it's normal to be really hungry when you're breastfeeding. And actually it can be, because if you're exclusively breastfeeding your baby, you need about 400-500 extra calories a day. And so this basically equates to an extra snack in the morning and an extra snack in the afternoon so that you're not going so long in between meals without eating. But make sure that you're eating food that's nutritious and healthy for you and your baby. So it's not a good excuse to eat 2 donuts or a bag of chips, even though that could be tempting, but make sure you're eating lots of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, lean protein, and healthy fat. Also make sure that you're drinking enough to stay well-hydrated. A good rule of thumb is just to have a cup of water close to you while you're nursing, and drink water while your baby is nursing, and that should help to make sure that you're staying well hydrated yourself. And be sure to take care of yourself and to eat regularly, because sometimes we're so busy caring for our baby that we're really hungry because it's been 8 hours since we ate. So make sure you're taking care of yourself too.
