Beijing spokesman on US trade standoff, INF treaty

(5 Dec 2018) China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday accused the United States of being "selective" in its application of international treaties as the US prepares to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia. Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said during a daily news briefing that if Washington leaves the pact it could lead to "multilateral negative impacts". The US has accused Russia of violating the INF Treaty, accusations Moscow has denied, which bans all land-based cruise and ballistic missiles with a range between 500 and 5,500 kilometres (310-3,410 miles). Geng added comments by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, where he took aim at China for alleged violations of multi-state agreements, were "inconsistent with the spirit" of recent meetings between leaders of the two global powers.
