(6 Nov 2018) NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, made a visit to Afghanistan on Tuesday, holding talks with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and other senior officials. At a joint news conference afterwards, Stoltenberg said it was in NATO counties' interest to remain in Afghanistan to increase their own security as well as that of Afghanistan itself. NATO has around 16,000 troops in the country to train and support local forces. Violence has been escalating in recent months as a resurgent Taliban hold nearly half of Afghanistan, with near-daily attacks on Afghan security forces. Earlier on Tuesday, just hours before Stoltenberg's unannounced visit, at least 20 Afghan border troops were killed in a Taliban attack on their base in western Farah province. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani thanked NATO for its support but stressed on the importance of negotiating a peace that "all Afghans buy into". But the Taliban view the US-backed government in Kabul as a dysfunctional Western puppet and have refused repeated offers to negotiate with it.
