2018 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year Matthew Miller argues that teachers must help students around the nation feel heard, and feel as if their voices matter. He laments the fact that many students do not feel that their opinions or visions are valued, and it is up to teachers to extend that invitation to them to participate. “We need to be developing leaders today,” he says. “We need to find ways to transcend the physical boundaries of our schools, and teach our students to begin having an impact today on their communities.”
