One in ten men in South Africa will be affected by prostate cancer and that could be your father, brother, uncle, grandfather or a friend. Most men in South Africa have a fear of getting tested or believe in the stigma that getting tested is a violation, not understanding the process. Prostate cancer is on the rise in South Africa, especially among younger black men, we need to educate both young and older men on the risks of not having regular screenings, what treatment options there are as well as life after your diagnosis. When it comes to understanding your journey with prostate cancer, you need to know your options. In the treatment of localised prostate cancer, which is contained in the prostate gland and hasn’t spread to other parts of the body, doctors will usually focus on the treatment procedure. But what about the other concerns? What if you still want to have more children? What are the treatment options available? It is important to remember to discuss these things before having any type of treatment for prostate cancer.
