(7 Nov 2018) The German foreign minister on Wednesday said that the results of the midterm elections in the US did not fundamentally change his country's relationship with its "most important partner outside Europe." Heiko Maas said that while this relation "shifted in emphasis" in the past two years, it remained crucial to solving global issues from security to trade and climate change - adding that foreign policy decisions in the US directly impacted Germany and Europe. He further called on responding to the US administration's "America First" stance with a "Europe united" in joint action on transnational issues. He also said that the success of more diverse and younger candidates in Tuesday's elections reaffirmed the leading role the US "still has and hopefully continues to have" in championing diversity and civil rights and liberties.
