Outgoing UN Envoy: "Iraq has potential"

United Nations, New York, 18 June 2009 - Following his final brief to the Security Council the UN Envoy to Iraq, Steffan de Mistura, has told the media the war-torn country has the potential to not only overcome its challenges but flourish. However, Mr. de Mistura added much of Iraq's progress now depends on a number of key priorities, including an improvement in the daily lives of its people and defusing existing tensions. Mr de Mistura has been the UN's Envoy to Iraq for the past 18 months. Next month he will take up his new post as Deputy Executive-Director of the World Food Programme (WFP).
