Musical whistle ----------------------- The musical whistle of steam engines are no longer heard on the vast network of Indian Railways, except in Nilgiri Hills, and Darjeeling where steam engines are still operational on the hill railways. However, with a thrust to preserve some mainline steam engines and use them on special occasions, one can enjoy hearing the sound, as we did on a journey aboard a heritage train hauled by a bullet-nose Pacific class broad gauge (1676 mm) steam engine No. 7200 WP named "Shahenshah", maintained by the Rewari Steam Loco shed of Northern Railway, India. The 1.5 hour run commenced from Delhi Safdarjang station via Hazrat Nizamuddin, Vivek Vihar, Delhi Jn., New Delhi, and back to Delhi Safdarjang. This 1445 HP steam engine was built in 1962 by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, and was retired after all mainline trains were run by diesel and electric locomotives. ------ This locomotive has since been renamed "Azad".
