IPL betting rackets busted in Mumbai, 14 bookies held in 2 days

The DB Marg police arrested 10 people on Monday for accepting bets on matches being played during the ongoing Indian Premiere League (IPL) season. They were arrested from Grant Road (East) for accepting bets for predicting winners and losers during the matches played between Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders, as well as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a room behind a Ganpati temple on the MS Ali Road and arrested the accused. During the raid, cops seized Rs3.93 lakh, 12 mobile phones and a television set. “The accused were accepting bets when we raided the room. They were arrested and booked under the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887, and were released on bail from the police station,” said senior inspector Pandurang Shinde from DB Marg police station. Arrests in New Panvel The Navi Mumbai crime branch busted an IPL betting racket on Saturday and arrested four people from New Panvel. Those arrested were identified as Panvel residents Imran Dhanani, 27, and Sandeep Yadav, 41, Joyesh Karia from Gujarat and Ashirwand Mhaske, 24, of Solapur. All four were produced in court and remanded in police custody till April 21. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a flat at Krishnakunj building in Sector-12 and apprehended the four while accepting bets during a live match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police (crime), said the accused would create unique codes for each of their clients and took bets only after the matches started. “They were careful while choosing their clients and entertained only those who came via known references,” he said.
