(12 Dec 2018) French police searched an apartment where the gunman suspected to be behind the attack on Strasbourg's Christmas market was believed to have lived. Neighbours said they heard the police break in and the lock of the door is broken. Police were guarding the building where the gunman was believed to have lived, in an outer neighbourhood of Strasbourg. Each door in the building is marked with the resident's name; the suspect's apartment, on the fifth floor, bears a tag reading "Chekatt C." Police union officials identified the suspected assailant as Cherif Chekatt, a 29-year-old with a thick police record for crimes including armed robbery and monitored as a suspected religious radical by the French intelligence services. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss details of the large and ongoing investigation into the attack that set France on edge anew. His apartment is in a housing project considered a "sensitive zone" by French police, just three kilometers (1.8 miles) from the Christmas market but seemingly a world away from its glittering boutiques and tidy streets. Hundreds of police and soldiers are hunting for Chekatt, 29, who opened fire near Strasbourg's Christmas market Tuesday, killing two and leaving one brain dead.
