This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The deaf population is continually challenged to communicate within our environment, making it a frustrating reality from which there is no escape. Tarik will present insights of the deaf population and do a live demonstration of their prototype that will give a voice to the voiceless. A device that has the potential to shatter the communication barrier. Tarik Sayeed has held several leadership roles in IT with companies such as JumpTV, Comcast, and First West Credit Union. He was nominated for IT Manager of the Year in 2011. He left a successful career to launch BabyTaxi, a tech start-up company building software using gesture recognition technology to translate American Sign Language into corresponding text & voice. Tarik studied at NJIT, the University of Waterloo, and has a leadership certification from MIT. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
