Severe storms will be possible Monday afternoon and evening across primarily parts of eastern Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Subtropical ridging will remain in place over the Southeast and southern Plains while enhanced southwesterly flow aloft persists along the northern and western periphery of this ridging, from central CA through the upper Great Lakes and into the Northeast. Shortwave trough currently over ID will move within this belt of stronger flow, reaching the upper Midwest by the afternoon and upper Great Lakes by 00Z Tuesday. At the surface, frontal zone currently stretching from the TX Panhandle northeastward into Lower MI will remain largely in place. Some sharpening of this boundary is anticipated during the afternoon as a frontal low moves northeastward along the it. Farther southwest, Tropical Storm Rosa is expected to make landfall along the central Baja Peninsula Monday afternoon, then continuing northeastward into far southwest AZ by early Tuesday morning. Showers and thunderstorms will likely be ongoing north of the front at the beginning of the period. This elevated activity is expected to spread eastward/northeastward from IA/southern WI/northern IL into Lower MI throughout the day and evening. Some intensification of these elevated storms is possible as the low-level jet remains focusing into the region and mid-level flow and lift strengthen ahead of the approaching shortwave trough. Given the elevated character of these storms, the primary severe threat would be hail. Moist, tropical air mass associated with Tropical Storm Rosa will contribute to widespread showers and occasional thunderstorms across the region throughout the day. Moist profiles will limit instability but strengthening mid-level wind associated with the tropical cyclone will contribute to the potential for a few stronger storms capable of strong wind gusts.
