My 2 speed bicycle build is complete! Below is a summary of the new components on my 2x1 commuter bicycle.

Front Derailleur
salvage from my Lemond bike
same clamp diameter, same cable pull direction

Rear Derailleur
salvage from my Lemond bike
used as a chain tensioner to take up chain slack

Chainrings
my original rings fit the new front derailleur

Chain
multi-speed chain I already had

Shifter
front shifter unused in my 1x9 project (below)
friction type so it is compatible with any derailleur
bar end type (similar to thumb shifters or downtube shifters) so easy to use with bulky winter gloves

Shift Cables
already had some

Total cost: $0
Added weight: 450 grams (1 pound)

High Gear: 46t/16t (2.9 gear ratio)
Low Gear: 36t/16t (2.2 gear ratio)

Future improvements? Maybe a dedicated chain tensioner and a higher quality front derailleur, but otherwise I think it's a pretty good setup considering this is for my rain bike that gets dirty a lot.
