Mauritius – Seychelles Joint Management Area: A Model of Regional Integration

Mauritius and the Seychelles peacefully co-manage an area of 396,000 square kilometers of the continental shelf of the Mascarenes. Instead of disputing over the sovereignty of this zone, these two African countries, both members of SADC and COMESA, proceeded with a joint submission before the United Nations which validated the joint management of this platform. All projects aimed at exploiting the resources therein will be co-funded and any benefits will be shared equally. The respective governments find it a win-win deal for mutual economic prosperity. This first world-ever partnership is taking shape with a jointly agreed exploration to detect petrol and gas. Many other countries are now emulating this exemplary model of regional integration.
