“Jihad is not to slaughter minorities. It’s not to destroy churches, places of worship, & shrines of the past. Jihad exists to prevent these very things from happening.”

“Pakistan has a rapidly increasing culture of mob mentality in relation to the Christian minority. Individuals are routinely accused of blasphemy as an excuse for personal vendettas. Ignorant mullahs rouse the people’s feelings, who then pull people out of their homes & burn them to death. This is not Islam.

“As Shias, we’ve been targets since Day 1. It’s becoming such a daily routine, that even our community doesn’t feel it as much. It’s always someone we know being killed, be it a relative, a friend, or their relative. Even government officials & the media don’t feel they need to pursue things further.”

“In Karachi, a grenade was thrown into the ladies hall during a majlis, injuring 9 women & killing a baby girl. No condemnation from government officials, & the media only briefly reported on it online, then moved on.”

“We look at various situations complaining that the whole world is against us, talking about our image. Yes the world would be against us and our image due to extremists who should be blamed first & foremost. But the others who dont like us, exploit these situations and use them against us. It becomes a feeding ground for them to project a negative image.”

“The ugly situation we face today was not the norm in history. Look at the last Ottoman Empire who controlled some of Eastern Europe. Turks ruled over Greece for 500 years, yet they didn’t destroy churches, burn books, or close seminaries. Greek society functioned as before, controlled by the Orthodox Church. When Greece separated from the Empire, Western historians say there were many Greeks who decided to stay in Turkey because they considered them more benevolent rulers compared to their own. That is the image which has to come forward. Not the Talibani version, or the Salafi version.”

“Hussain is the universal example of what Islam stands for. He’s a symbol for humanity, and an example for us to show concern for other human beings.”
