How do you get people to use the stairs instead of the escalator? Watch this fantastic clip and find out! The idea clearly worked -- but why? Was it simply the novelty? I believe it was more than that -- crazy as it may sound, I believe it was because people felt their actions made a difference. As Paul Bloom says, toddlers may knock down and break a pile of plates then look up to their mother and smile 'Wow! I did that!!' Put another way -- it matters to us whether we matter or not! There have been some fascinating studies on the subject involving dogs, cages, nursing homes, plants and even investment bank traders! And yes, it does have a lot to do with our field as well.
