The best gardening product you’ve never heard of:
A frost suddenly shows up on the spring weather forecast. What do you do about that bed full of tender flowers or patch of cold-wimpy peppers you already planted?

You could risk flattening the plants by covering them with a sheet... or risk overheating them in the morning by covering them with clear plastic.

Better yet, you could nurse them through that cold night with a product specifically made for plant frost protection – floating row covers.

Sometimes called “garden fabric” or “plant blankets,” these light-weight, woven-polyester covers are porous enough to let in rain, air, and light but protective enough to buy three to five degrees of extra warmth overnight.

Row covers are also useful for keeping flying bugs off vegetable plants. They can be draped right over the plants all season or turned into mini-greenhouses with the support of hoops or PVC piping. And they can be used as shade protection for helping cool-season crops in hot summers.
