Mogherini comments on INF treaty, Crimea crisis

(5 Dec 2018) EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said on Wednesday the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty has helped guarantee peace in Europe for the last 30 years and "we definitely do not want to see this being torn apart". Mogherini spoke as she arrived for the final day of a two-day NATO council of foreign ministers in Brussels. The INF Treaty is under threat as the United States intends to walk away from the post-Cold War agreement over alleged Russian violations. Mogherini said Europeans do not "underestimate the security challenges and security threats" that could develop should the treaty no longer be in place. She added the EU was "extremely concerned" at rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine in the Sea of Azov.
