Becca and Howie Corbett (Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart) struggle to become the people they once were after the tragic death of their son. While Howie finds comfort and solace in familiarity and routine, Becca is tortured by it and reluctantly turns to her mother (Dianne Wiest) for support, as well as secretly meeting with the boy who caused the fatal accident (Miles Teller). Howie has secret impulses of his own, as he seeks refuge by imagining himself with another woman, Gaby (Sandra Oh), who offers a connection that Becca can't. Yet despite the pain and recrimination, Becca and Howie keep finding their way back to one another in this heart-breaking portrayal of two people learning to move forward with a less-than-perfect life.
