Before I record video of a potentially fascinating subject, I think about how I can make this an interesting story, a documentary video that would be worthy of posting on YouTube. Often, this strategy goes nowhere. But, sometimes, such as this occasion, it is worth the extra effort!
The trailhead to Dungeness Spit at the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge is just a 3-mile drive from our house. So, when I received a text invitation from John, our next-door neighbor to meet him at the Spit in a few hours to take pictures of “big waves” at high tide, we were ready to go! It was a sunny, windy Sunday morning, and the first day after the change from daylight saving time time back to standard time. We were fortunate to get the last available parking spot at the Park entrance! Before heading down the ½-mile wooded path to the Spit, I insisted to Diane that we walk along the bluff trail to get a birds-eye view of the waves. 200 feet above the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the bluff trail overlooks gave us spectacular peek views of the dramatic crashing of big, dirty waves on the remaining thin beach as high tide approached. Having recorded video of the starting point of this story, we proceeded onward down to the Spit!
It took four edits of this video to cut it down to the point where I think (I hope) it is worthy of your time to watch in its entirety, so that you can appreciate – feel the awesome power of the wind and ocean waves. Let me know what you think!
