(4 Dec 2018) Children in the Californian town of Paradise returned to school on Monday, almost a month after wildfires devastated their community. Schools in the county had been closed since 8 November when the fires swept through Paradise and surrounding areas, killing at least 88 people. Among those returning to Paradise Elementary School on Monday were first-grader Maisie Ratliff, aged 6, and her brother Micah who's in fourth grade. Micah said it had been a sad time, as his house had burned down and the family's pets had all perished. Their mother Holly said she was glad the school had reopened, as it would help restore a little normality to their lives. About 31,000 students in all have been away from school since the disaster. On Monday nearly all of them went back, though some of them attended class in other buildings because their schools were damaged or destroyed, or inaccessible inside evacuation zones.
