Fleeing one's home to escape violence has become a fact of life for ordinary people in the east of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where a conflict is raging between multiple armed groups in the provinces of North and South Kivu. The area around Lake Kivu, with its lush vegetation, has a complex history of inter-ethnic violence and battles for the control of mineral wealth.

These are some of the human stories behind the conflict in the Kivus, where civilians suffer from a lack of resources and difficulties accessing health care. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been providing medical and humanitarian aid to the victims of war in DRC since 1996, and is currently providing high-quality medical care in North and South Kivu in 10 referral hospitals, 31 health centers, nine health posts, and a number of cholera treatment centers.
