Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts lead an exceptional ensemble cast in this dark comedy about a dysfunctional family. Caustic Oklahoma matriarch Violet Weston (Meryl Streep) is addicted to painkillers and suffering from cancer. She summons her widely dispersed family after her drunken poet husband Beverly (Sam Shepard) disappears. Barbara (Julia Roberts) is the strongest of the siblings, who stands up to her mother's bitchiness. She arrives with her estranged husband Bill (Ewan MacGregor) and their rebellious daughter Jean (Abigail Breslin). Her sister Karen (Juliette Lewis) turns up with latest boyfriend, Steve (Dermot Mulroney), in tow. Also present for the ensuing family fireworks are Violet's sister Mattie Fae (Margo Martindale), her husband Charles (Chris Cooper) and their downtrodden son 'Little' Charles (Benedict Cumberbatch). Produced by George Clooney and adapted by Tracy Letts from her own Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this is a searing black comedy centred on an astonishingly messed-up family!
