Getting the right distance between the tailpiece and the bridge

When you have the right distance between the violin talipiece and the bridge, you will get some really nice sympathetic harmonics which will help your violin cut through the jam. The distance should be a sixth that of the distance from the nut to the bridge. Thhis means there should be a two octave and a fifth interval between the regular string note and the note you hear when you pluck the string between the bridge and the tailpiece. This distance is hard to set by measuring, so the best way is to do it by ear. This video shows you how to do that! When you pluck the D string, you are playing a D4 note. Therefore the note you hear below the bridge should be two octaves and a fifth above the D4, which is an A6. This is true for the rest of the strigns as well.
