Na'ema Mawdadi, an Afghan police officer since 2007, reads one of her poems Oct. 29, 2018 at the Herat municipal police headquarters. In the poem, which she wrote after last’s years bombing of the German Embassy in Kabul, Mawdadi says goodbye to friends lost and says goodbye to bad memories as well. Mawdadi, who like many Afghans holds poetry in high esteem, writes to cope with years of war and loss.
