11 January 2016 The recent sharing photos of horn-bill hatching nest hole at Tg Aru 1st beach has the public concern about the well being of the pair of birds especially when it located next to a demolition work of Sugar Bun building after the expire of their lease. The appearance of the horn-bill hatching nest got the attention of Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Masidi Manjun whom has tasked the Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) to send officers to monitor and evaluate the nest hole which next to a demolition work site. It is still unsure what SWD will do with the nest whether to relocate it or to install a protective installation around the nest to protect from predators and reduce disturbance caused by the work site. It is speculated that the birds which has been spotted for many years not usual seen around the KK area was release or escaped from a birds collector. It is also speculated that the birds came from the south where it flew all the way from Sarawak or Brunei. Regardless what, the finding of the horn-bill nest hole which on an old casuarina trees shows that Tg Aru beach area is the sanctuary and only suitable habitats for various species of birds within the growing and expanding area of Kota Kinabalu city. The proposed controversial excavation and reclamation project for luxury condos, resorts and marina by TAED has many wonder what are the government thinking by allowing the destruction of the natural beach space which is the jewel and pride of Kota Kinabalu folks since the old days. Tg Aru beach have always be a famous hot spot for bird watching activities because of it location near to a city and unique habitats for various birds especially the blue-nape parrot and the horn-bill which not seen in other places. The state government and city hall is responsible to protect and preserve this few last remaining patch of green area from destructive activities such as unnecessary destructive excavation and reclamation which will displace many unique birds and animal species which has already adapt quite well to this area.
