Judy had been a painter for more than 60 years, but her ability to create artwork was tested more than a decade ago when her left hand began to shake. It continued to shake for years, growing worse with each passing day until she could no longer hold a pen to sign her name. Judy had a condition called an essential tremor. She tried medications to reduce her shaking, but those didn’t help. Judy’s doctor referred her to the Center for Neuromodulation at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where she met neurologist and movement disorder specialist Barbara Changizi, MD, and neurosurgeon Milind Deogaonkar, MBBS. The neuromodulation specialists evaluated Judy and recommended she undergo deep brain stimulation, a surgical procedure that treats neurological symptoms like tremor, rigidity and stiffness. Judy had the procedure and, today, her days are back to focusing on what she enjoys: painting and making new art.
