(11 Dec 2018) Amid rising pressure from China on the United States and Canada over the arrest of a top Chinese technology executive, residents of Beijing voiced criticism over what they see as a politically motivated move in hampering Chinese interests overseas.
A bail hearing for Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies, is set to resume on Tuesday in Canada.
Meng was detained on December 1 while changing planes in Vancouver.
The US wants her extradited.
It alleges Huawei used a Hong Kong shell company to evade US trade curbs on Iran.
Her arrest could fuel US-China trade tensions at a time when the two sides are seeking to resolve a dispute over Beijing's technology and industrial strategy, and local residents are taking notice.
Store manager Huang Yanbin criticised US calls for extradition adding China should do likewise to retaliate.
Cao Lei, manager of Chinese ornamental stone association said Canada's image has been tarnished over the move.
At a briefing on China's intellectual property reforms, Wu Handong, an expert in intellectual property rights policies, said the court's ruling saying the judge upheld international norms protecting rights regardless of nationality, size or form.
The president of China's national Patent Attorneys Association said the case is a sign of confidence in China's judicial system, and that in the future, China will gradually become the "main battlefield" for IP lawsuits.
